Police Department  - A Historic Perspective
 


The Newburyport Police Department is rich in history. To preserve some of this history and tradition, we have assembled some images of days gone by. Capt. Charles W. Wells

Police Officer from

1882-1920

At approximately 4:10 am, Captain Charles W. Wells, along with other Newburyport Police Officers, procured a sleigh to respond to a house fire.  Upon arrival the Captain hurried to facilitate the work of the fireman and to save property.  Captain Wells collapsed and was taken to a nearby home where a Physician was summoned.  The Captain died of an apparent heart attack before the doctor arrived.

Captain Wells name was engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.

Capt. Patrick Creeden

Police Officer from

1887-1905

In the early morning hours of December 26th, 1905 Captain Patrick Creeden received notice that parties who were arrested in a raid on Sunday were going to leave the city on the Pullman train.  The Captain along with Officer Adams went to the Train Depot to inspect the cars when he saw the suspects.  As the train started, Officer Adams and one suspect got off one end of the train and the Captain was getting on the other end of the train.  Officer Adams and the suspect walked towards the Captain when they saw him stumble. The Officers were unable to assist the Captain before he fell off the Boston & Maine Bridge over Merrimac St. onto the street below. A doctor and ambulance were summoned.  He was transported to the Anna Jaques Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Captain Creedens  name was engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.

 

Officer John H. Page Jr.

Police Officer From

1921-1927

At approximately 2:15 pm Officer Page was riding a Police Motorcycle on State St. near Stone's Garage when he collided with an Essex Touring car.  Officer Page was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital for treatment of his injuries.  While he was waiting for a blood transfusion the Officer developed a sudden hemorrhage and died.

Officer Pages name was engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC.
