Q: I have
information about a crime I believe has occurred or I know the
whereabouts of someone wanted for a crime. What should I do?
A: For any crime in progress, call 911.
It is helpful if you first provide an exact location, then
details of the crime including, if possible, a description of
the suspect (s) involved. If you have any information about a
violent Felony crime or know the whereabouts of someone wanted
for a crime, you are encouraged to call 978-465-8762. Callers
remain anonymous. |

Q:
How do I check on the status of a case?
A: The
Inspector's office will receive cases from Supervisors who
review all cases. Each case that is sent to the Inspector's
office is reviewed and assigned to an Inspector. If your case
has been assigned to an Inspector, the Operations Lieutenant
will then keep you abreast of the case through mail
correspondence. Each case has three levels of status:
Open -
Suspended - Closed.
If your case
is in the OPEN
mode, it is considered (hot) and the investigator will follow
all leads to locate the perpetrator (s) and charge them
accordingly.
If your case
is in the SUSPENDED
mode, this means that all leads have been exhausted. The case
will remain in the Inspector's office for a period of time or
until new leads are developed.
If your case
is in the CLOSED
mode, this means that either the case was solved and the perp
(s) were charged or all leads have been exhausted and a period
of time has passed and no leads have developed. |

Q: What can I
expect if I am a victim of a crime and the case goes to court?
A:
If your case goes to court and you are a victim, the District
Attorney's Office will be in touch with you, through the
Victim/Witness advocate. You will receive a letter in the mail,
keeping you informed of the case and it's status. You will also
have the right to express your thoughts about the case and the
circumstances surrounding it. |

intentional false information or the dissemination of certain material could
constitute Federal violations.

Q: How can I find out if my
neighbor has a criminal record?
A: Unfortunately you
can't. Individuals have the right to privacy and that includes their
criminal records. But, you do have the right to know if there is a
registered Sex Offender within your neighborhood. There is a simple form at
the police station that can assist you. Once you submit the request you will
be notified by an officer in charge of registering Sex Offenders, what the
results are. |
